The Ceiling Incident
This was more prominent in band than anywhere else, but a good portion of the rest of the school took notice as well.
3 or 4 members of my high school band were infamous, among the students at least, for their routine excursions in the ceiling above the school. The teachers didn’t find out, but elsewhere it was common knowledge. The boys would go up through a hole in the room where we stored non perishable food, water bottles, utensils, etc. for after school marching band activities. Then, they would sort of just walk around up there for a while.
It actually worked for a long time. They didn’t get caught. Until lunch one day, everything came crashing down, quite literally.
They had climbed up, per usual. They usually walk on the sort of rungs/separations in between the tile, as the tiles themselves have been known to fall even unprompted. However, today one of them misstepped.
The tile came crashing down about four inches in front of the band directors face.
Now, our band director has a reputation for being somewhat intimidating. Often, people don’t join band out of fear of him. So I’m pretty sure in that moment, all of those boys knew they were royally screwed.
For a moment, no one said anything. The band director started upwards in astonishment. My friends and I, food halfway to our mouths, looked towards the dust cloud that was rising from the ceiling tile, our facial expressions a mixture of shock, awe, and terror. I’m sure the boys in the ceiling looked similarly.
Finally, after a moment of stunned silence, the band director says “Gentlemen, we know you’re up there. You might as well come down.” Then he turns on his walkie talkie, calls for the admin team and says “I got em.”
The boys filed straight out of the storage room and into the band directors office, where they got yelled at for a solid 10 minutes. They ended up getting two days of out of school suspension, which I honestly think was a bit extreme considering they previously had clean records.
It went down as one of the most iconic moments in our band’s history, thereafter referred to as “The Ceiling Incident.”
