In the common system of nomenclature, the ethers are named by writing names of the alkyl groups attached to the oxygen atom in alphabetical order and word ether is added. If two alkyl groups are same, prefix di- is used. According to the IUPAC system of nomenclature, ethers are named as alkoxyalkanes The larger alkyl group is considered to be the parent alkane.
