The chipko movement or chipko andolan was a forest conserving movement in india. It began in 1973 by sunderlal bahuguna in uttar pradesh and became a rallying point for many future environmental movements. All over the world it created a precedent for starting of non violent protest in india. It was to inspire in time many such eco groups by helping down to slow down deforestation,increase ecological awareness and many such things. All of the above it stirred up the existing civil society in India . it began to address the issues of tribal and marginalised people.
In 1987, chipko movement was awarded the right livelihood award. The chipko andolan was practised from the gandhiyan age, there were both male and female protests.
Chandi prasad bhat was awarded Ramon magsaysay award in 1982 and sunderlal bahuguna was awarded padma vibhushana award in 2009.
They protested the construction of Tehri dam on bhadravathi river, which went on for next 2 decades.
