1. Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj was also known as Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj. From the Bhosle dynasty of Marathas Shahu Maharaj was the raja of princely state of Kolhapur. He was a remarkable democrat and social reformer. He worked vigorously for the cause of the lower caste.  
2. He is associated with providing education to all despite high caste issue those days. He was credited for employment and education to all. He started weaving and a spinning mill. He initiated the Radhanagari dam which made Kolhapur self-efficient for water.
