Gene mapping describes the methods used to identify the locus of a gene and the distances between genes. The essence of all genome mapping is to place a collection of molecular markers onto their respective positions on the genome. Molecular markers come in all forms.

Genome mapping

- assigning/locating of a specific gene to particular region of a chromosome and determining the location of and relative distances between genes on the chromosome.

Types of maps:

Linkage maps

Physical maps

Linkage maps

Physical maps

represent chromosomes and provide physical distances between chromosomal landmarks ideally measured in nucleotide bases.

Types of physical maps:

Chromosomal or cytogenetic maps

Radiation hybrid (RH) maps
