The gifts of even ordinary people like Della and Jim can be greater ghan those of magi who were the kings of persia with lot of wealth.
Della and Jim struggled a lot for gathering enough money to be able to buy presents for each other.
Jim sold his gold watch which belonged to his father and grandfathers. On the othet hand Della sold her beautiful hair even though Jim did not liked.
The most important point here is the gifts of Magi could be exchanged in case of duplication. whereas the gifts of Della and Jim cannot be exchanged at all. In this way the title is most appropriate.
