If a gynoecium has a single carpel, it is called monocarpous. If a gynoecium has multiple, distinct (free, unfused) carpels, it is apocarpous. If a gynoecium has multiple carpels "fused" into a single structure, it is syncarpous.

According the number of the carpels of the Gynoecium there are different types of carpels structure can be found.
- Gynoecium consisting of one carpel then is known as monocarpous.
- Gynoecium which consists more than one or multiple carpels which are free and unfused is called apocarpous
- Gynoecium which consists more than one carpels which are joined to form a single structure is called syncarpous.
