Ocean Energy Resources include Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC), Tidal energy and Wave energy. Ocean energy is an indirect form of solar energy. The seas and the oceans absorb solar radiations. This results in temperature gradients in the water surface—downwards i.e. warm surface water and colder deep waters.

Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion Plants convert the solar energy stored as heat in the ocean into electrical energy by making use of this temperature difference.

This process is based on the thermodynamic principle which states that if a heat source is available at a higher temperature and a heat sink at a lower temperature it is possible to utilize the temperature difference in a machine (turbine) that can convert part of the heat taken up from the source into mechanical energy (by connecting the turbine to a generator).

Hope it helps
