First attach the wire or current carrying conductor with electric supply and make sure that current is flowing thought the wire/conductor.As soon as current is starting flowing through the conductor magnetic field will be produced around the conductor.To detect the magnetic field bring the compass near to conductor, compass will show deflection, showing the presence of the magnetic field.To measure the strength of the magnetic field use magnetometer.
