write one paragraph about how the atmosphere is created and achieved
The world dissolved into a blur of colour as Max teleported through space-time. His vision reformed into the dark abyss of the maw of the cave. Gingerly stepping forward into the darkness, Max felt the teleportation nausea slowly leave his body. Here it was. The cave of wealth.
The tunnel was dimly lit by the flickering light of burning skulls, hanging in brackets on the rock walls. Human skulls. Max felt his breath unconsciously quicken and his palms becoming sweaty.
Merging himself with space, Max teleported further into the cave. The tunnel widened out to a large rocky cavern. Excitement mounting, Max walked forward, searching for the treasure. He was so intent on finding it and leaving that he didn’t notice a soft thudding sound getting louder and reverberating on the hard walls. In the distance, crows and ravens started squawking. Death’s omen.
Max turned slowly to locate the sound, but immediately recoiled in horror as he saw a skeleton hanging from the wall. The skull was red with dried blood and its eyeholes turned to face Max, who felt as if he was staring into Death’s own eyes. Examining the skeleton closely, Max reached out and touched the blood red and deathly-white skull. Huge gouges were evident in its cheek and head. But what sort of creature would be strong enough to produce gouge marks so deep through bone?
THUD, THUD, THUD.
The sound came back, and Max heard it now. An ominous silence arrived as the thudding faded away into the darkness. A sense of impending doom was settling in on him. Max felt his hands shaking. He had to get out of here, or his skull would join the ones burning in the entrance.
Max tried to merge himself with space, trying to feel the regular tugging force on his head, but felt his power grasp an empty void. He tried again, feeling for the power, but to no avail. He was trapped. The thudding was almost on top of him now.
A piercing shriek, like the sound of nails on a chalkboard, sliced the air. Max turned as the sound came and felt his blood curdle as he saw the same, deep claw marks in the rock-hard cave wall. It was here. The killer had come.
A giant bear, over four metres tall, towered over Max. It wore a giant burning skull over its head that gleamed shiny-white in its own firelight. It growled with a guttural, blood-curdling howl. It’s huge, razor-sharp, scythe-like claws extended. It advanced slowly, its eyes fixed on its new prey. Max’s time had finished. His hour had come.
He was about to die.
