PEN refers to primary endosperm nucleus and it is triploid (3N).  Primary Endosperm Nucleus is nucleus which results from the fusion of two nuclei of the embryo sac with the male nucleus (sperm) prior to fertilization. Primary endosperm nucleus divides to form endosperm tissue.
