Cell is the functional and structural unit of the body.

The nucleus of the cell contains the genes,which are made up of Deoxyribonucleic Acid and are responsible for the trasmisssion of characteristics from one generation to the next.

The organism is able to retain it's deploid number of chromosomes in next generation by the process of gametogenesis in which because of meiotic division the chromosomes are halved in the gametes and after fertilization, the new progenies are of the same chromosomal composition. So Deploid number of chromosomes are maintained in all of the species.
