Protein X‐ray crystallography has affected drug discovery in (a) the identification of new drug targets, (b) the understanding of molecular target mechanisms, and (c) the discovery of new lead compounds. The integration of protein X‐ray crystallography into the early discovery process by joining it with chemical synthesis and assaying has become a very effective tool for lead optimization.
This article aims to familiarize scientists with X‐ray protein crystallographic techniques and their exemplified application for the purpose of drug discovery.
