An electron in the p orbital has an azimuthal quantum of 1. Hence the total electrons that can be accommodated in the p orbital are 6. ( 3 magnetic quantum numbers of -1, 0, 1 and two spins for each quantum number.)

Now according to Hund's rule pairing of electrons occurs when all available sub orbitals (where electrons have the same magnetic numbers) are filled with electrons with parallel or same spins. This can be understood by minimum energy conisderations.

In an 2p^(2) configurations only two electrons are to be filled in the 2p orbital. So both will be present in separate orbitals with parallel spins and the number of unpaired electrons will hence be two.
