Answer. The overall reaction is: C6H12N4 + 10 HNO3 → C3H6N6O6 + 3 CH2(ONO2)2 + NH4NO3 + 3 H2O. Modern syntheses employ hexahydro triacyl triazine as it avoids formation of HMX.
