Most reactions of obtaining oxides of elements is by combustion.

When we burn elements in air, we get their respective oxides.

For example when we burn Magnesium in air we get Magnesium oxide.

When we burn Sulphur in air, we get sulphur (iv) oxide.

When we burn Silver in air we get Silver Oxide.

We therefore conclude that in order to get oxides of elements, we burn them in air.
