Peer-to-peer or P2P is a type of network in which each station has equivalent capabilities and responsibilities. It is different from the client or server architectures where some computers are dedicated to serving the others.
Peer-to-peer networks are simpler but they do not offer the same performance under heavy loads. The P2P network relies on the computing power at the ends of a connection instead of from within the network itself.
