Turning gas into stone
Scientists may have found the most appropriate solution to global warming and rising temperature on earth. They have successfully turned carbon dioxide gas into stone.

Carbon dioxide was pumped into volcanic rock under Iceland which sped up a natural process that turns basalt into carbonate minerals which later becomes limestone.

Usually, this process takes thousands of years, but the new technique helped it happen in two years. The research offers a radical method to control the volume of increasing carbon dioxide in the environment.

Energy from raindrops
Scientists in China have developed a new solar cell that can generate energy not only from sunlight but also from raindrops. They coated panels with a thin layer of graphene to exploit the Lewis acid-base interaction, generating power even in less-than-ideal weather.

A big drawback with solar energy is that solar panels generate power only in sunlight and thus require ideal weather conditions. The new invention will now make it possible to generate energy in areas which were not considered ideal for lack of sunlight.

Another moon
Our moon has got a new companion—another moon, HO3. Scientists at NASA have discovered a small asteroid orbiting the sun which is going to be there for centuries.

HO3 appears to circle around earth as well. Scientists refer to it as a quasi-satellite of earth since it loops around our planet but never ventures very far away.

The longest prime number
This year mathematicians discovered a new prime number in January: 2^74,207,281 - 1. the number was found through the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search, a global network of CPUs peaking at 450 trillion calculations per second.

It is the longest continuously-running grassroots supercomputing project. The new prime number is the longest so far. Being five million longer than its predecessor, the only practical way to write it is: 2^74,207,281 - 1.

Data storage for 13.8 billion years
With a discovery made by scientists at the University of Southampton, you can now store data up to 360 TB in a nano-structured glass-looking device which can remain intact up to 1,000°C.

The average shelf life for this device is 13.8 billion years. An ultra-fast laser is used to write data on this device via short and intense light pulses. Each file is written in three layers of nano-structured dots which are only five micrometers apart.

Reading the data requires using five dimensions: the three-dimensional position of the nano-structured dots as well as their size and orientation.

Vertical rocket
We have usually seen a rocket landing vertically in comics, movies and cartoons. But in reality, it is very difficult to achieve this. Such a rocket will be cheaper and reusable, saving a lot of money.

SpaceX, an American aerospace manufacturer and space transport services company owned by Elon Musk, successfully launched a rocket vertically on a floating autonomus drone ship.

Musk not only achieved a longstanding goal for his organization but also inspired NASA and the European Space Agency to push space exploration forward.

Tiny link to complex life
Life as we know it began when organisms started growing from single cells to many. Scientists have found that shift, and it turns out to be a tiny movement—a single step for a cell and a leap for life on earth.

Single-cell organisms evolved into multi-cell organisms with an ancient molecule, GK-PID. This molecule pulls chromosomes together to latch them onto the inner wall of a cell membrane when division occurs which allows cells to copy properly and avoid becoming harmful.

GK-PID suggests that multi-cell life—without which earth would have just bacteria, algae, amoebae, fungi, etc. in the name of life—is the result of a single, identifiable mutation.

No more gray hair
Scientists from University College London announced the discovery of a gene for gray hair (IRF4). You may have been dyeing your hairs to cover graying but this latest discovery can completely cure graying of hairs.

The research team had collected more than 6,000 DNA samples of European, Native American and African people.

Oldest known land fossil
British scientists have discovered the oldest known land fossil, Tortotubus, which is around 440 million years old. They believe this may be one of the first organisms on the land and might have transformed the landscape to support more complex life through the process of decomposing.

So, Tortotubus may be responsible for the process of decay. The research team specified that Tortotubus, an organism like modern fungi, decomposed materials that transformed earth’s soil.
