Rule 1 : If the reporting verb is in the present or future form, then there will be no change in reported speech.

Example 1:

Direct Speech : Sakib says, "I did not go there".

Indirect Speech : Sakib says that he did not go there.

Example 2:

Direct Speech : He says, "I have done ".

Indirect Speech : Sakib says that he has done.

Rule 2 : If the reporting verb is in the past form, then the verb in the reported speech is changed into the corresponding past tense . Such as

Present Indefinite -> Past Indefinite

Present Continuous -> Past Continuous

Present Perfect -> Past Perfect

Present Perfect Continuous -> Past Perfect Continuous

Past Indefinite -> Past Perfect

Past Continuous -> Past Perfect Continuous

Future Tense with shall/will -> Future Tense with would/might.

N.B : Past Perfect, Past Perfect Continuous has no change.

Example 1:

Direct Speech : He said, "I am sick".

Indirect Speech : He said that he was sick.

Example 2:

Direct Speech : Masum said, "I am waiting for 4 hours".

Indirect Speech : Masum said that he was waiting for 4 hours.

Example 3:

Direct Speech : Hakkani said, "I have done my project".

Indirect Speech : Hakkani said that he had done his project.

Example 4:

Direct Speech : Dina said, "I have been working". Indirect Speech : Dina said that she had been working.

Example 5:

Direct Speech : Tanim said, "We implemented our work".

Indirect Speech : Tanim said that they had implemented their work.

Example 6 :

Direct Speech : He said, "I was writing a poem".

Indirect Speech : He said that he had been writing a poem.

Example 7 :

Direct Speech : She said to me, "I will go to dhaka".

Indirect Speech : She told me that he would go to dhaka.

Example 8 :

Direct Speech : Poltu said to me, "I will have finished the work".

Indirect Speech : Poltu told me that he would have finished the work.

Example 9 :

Direct Speech : He said, "I had finished my work".

Indirect Speech : He said that he had finished his work.

Example 10 :

Direct Speech : Ash said, "I had been working since morning".

Indirect Speech : Ash said that he had been working since morning.
