Given  :  ax  = ay  =  x   = y

To find : values a, x and y can take

Solution:

ax  = ay  =  x   = y

ax = x

=> x(a - 1) = 0

=> x = 0  or  a  =  1

ay = y

=> y(a - 1) = 0

=> y = 0  or a  = 1

ax  = ay

=> a(x - y)  = 0

=> a = 0      ,  x  =  y  

x , y = 0  ,   a can have any value

a =   1     ,  x , y can have any value such that x = y  

a = x = y = 0
