Embryology is a study of the origin and development of animals dealing with changes through which a fertilised egg must pass before it assumes the adult state. Fertilisation of an ovum by a spermatozoon results in the formation of a zygote. Development of a single-celled zygote into an adult involves a series of steps or stages resulting in a gradual increase in the complexity of structure. The stages of embryonic development differ in various chordates, yet the chief phases arebasically similar in all. The differences are related primarily tothe amount and distribution of yolk present in an egg. The inert yolk or vitellin furnishes nourishment for the developing embryo.
