L. Frank Baum’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: Chapter 7: The Journey to the Great Oz is about a young girl name Dorothy (Judy Garland) and her dog Toto are flung backward in their homes into the magical Land of Oz when a tornado rips through Kansas. When Dorothy finally landed, she found herself in a beautiful land inhabited by tiny, weirdly-dressed people.
The North Witch tells Dorothy that she is in Munchkins territory, who are thankful that the Eastern Witch (Dorothy’s house that landed on the witch) has been destroyed, thereby freeing them. The 'north Witch' gives to Dorothy her 'dead witch's silver shoes' and told her to 'visit the city of Emeralds' and see the 'great Wizard Oz', who would help her return to Kansas.
The 'witch sends Dorothy' away with a 'magical kiss' along the 'yellow brick road', to save her from harm. On the way they encounter a 'scarecrow' (Ray Bolger), who needs a brain, a 'Tin Man' (Jack Haley) who lacks a heart, and a 'Cowardly Lion' (Bert Lahr) who needs courage; they follow the 'yellow Brick Road' toward 'Emerald City to meet the Wizard'.
EXPLANATION:
- For the travellers, this was an eventful day. They had not gone for about an hour before they saw a large ditch crossing the road and splitting the forest as far back and forth as they were able to see. It was a very wide gorge, and when they pressed up to its edge and looked within they could also see it was very deep.
- The travellers continue through the dark and gloomy forest coming to a second ditch much larger than the first. The sides were very steep that none of them were able to go down, and their journey seemed to stop for a moment. They're coming to a wide ditch first.
- The Lion decided that he would leap the length. Each member of the party moves through the ditch carried by the Lion one by one. Then the travellers proceed to another ditch much bigger than the first, through the dark and deep wooded trees.
