Agra Fort is a historical fort in the city of Agra in India. It was the main residence of the emperors of the Mughal Dynasty until 1638, when the capital was shifted from Agra to Delhi. Before capture by the British, the last Indian rulers to have occupied it were the Marathas. In 1983, the Agra fort was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.[1] It is about 2.5 km northwest of its more famous sister monument, the Taj Mahal. The fort can be more accurately described as a walled city.

Agra fort is a fort of immense significance in the history of India. It is located in the city of Agra in Uttar Pradesh, a north Indian state.

It was the capital of Mughal Empire for a long time because of its centrality in the map of India. Later it fell into ruins as the capital moved to Delhi. When Akbar decided to move again to Agra, again because of its central location, he found it in a dilapidated state. The work of rebuilding the fort was once again commissioned, this time with sandstones from Rajasthan. These stones have a reddish tint hence the name ‘Lal-Quila’ or the Red Fort, but it is not to be confused with the Red Fort in Delhi.

This is a beautifully constructed fort with grand facades and ornamented towers. There are the galleries and terraces of Diwane-aam (for common public) and Diwane-Khas (for the VIPs and the royal families), where concerts of dance and music were regularly held as also meetings.

▪︎Situated alongside the Yamuna, this fort was the seat from where Akbar ruled as the emperor.

▪︎Later when Shah Jahan was the ruler, he built the Taj Mahal in memory of his wife. The tower where Shah Jahan spent his last days offered him a good view of the Taj Mahal.
