  • The 2019 Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) amends the 1955 Citizenship Act to allow Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians from Afghanistan, Myanmar, and Pakistan who joined India on or before December 31, 2014, liable for Indian citizenship applications.
  • Under the 1955 rule, in order to be entitle for citizenship, a person must have resided in India for at least 11 years. The revised Act limits the span to five years for all migrants belonging to those six religious communities from these three nations.
