a) The Constituent Assembly was a group of elected representatives, who came together to frame the Constitution of India. It was convened in August 1946 and chaired by Dr. Rajendra Prasad.
b) The members belonged to different political parties and social backgrounds.
c) First, the Draft Committee, headed by Dr. BR Ambedjar, prepared a draft constitution. Then the Assembly deliberated on each provision and article in the constitution. Extensive debate was carried out, and the entire transcript of the same has been recorded in CAD-Constituent Assembly Debates.
d) The Assembly met over a span of 3 years, from December 1946 to November 1949 in Delhi, finalising the constitution on 26 November 1949.

The Constituent Assembly was actually the mirror of India. It represented Hindus, Muslims, Parsis , Anglo Indians, SCs, STs and also the members of the other backward classes. It also gave due representation to the members of the Forward Bloc, Hindu Mahasabha and also the Muslim League. Women like Vijayalakshmi Pandit, Sarojini Naidu and Rajkumari Amrit Kaur were prominent members. Dr.Rajendra Prasad was the chairman of the Drafting Committe.
