Metals like copper , zinc , tin , silver , gold , are refined by this method. In this process , pure metal is taken as cathode and the impure metal is taken as anode . A solution of metal salt is taken as electrolyte. When electric current is passed , the pure metal from the anode dissolves into the electrolyte. An equal amount of pure metal from the electrolyte get deposited over the cathode and the impurities get collected below the anode in the form of anode mud .
