•Epidermis is actually the layer which is present in the outermost part or region which covers the body of an organism. For example: the surface epithelium that is present in the skin of humans is what is known as the epidermis layer.

Here are some functions of epidermis layer:

The cells constituting this layer has the role to protect the underlying cells from any kind of mechanical stress and damage.

• In plants, the waxy cuticle that is present in the layer of epidermis prevents moisture loss from leaves and stems.

• Also, this layer allows the passage of light into the mesophyll tissue by crossing through chloroplasts of the cell.

•In animlas, this layer acts as a barrier and doesn't allow passage of UV rays, pathogens, chemicals, etc.
