The Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the western Indian state of Gujarat. It was developed to protect the Asiatic Lion or Panthera leo persica from extinction. The population had gone down to 18, when an alarm was sounded; according to a census carried out in 2015, the number had risen to 523. In order to ensure further growth of the lion population and eliminate the dangers posed by natural perils of a single environment, Kuno Wildlife Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh has been proposed as a second habitat, but this was met with protests from the Gujarat Government and the local population.
