Klinga War was fought between the Maurya Empire and the state of Klinga. Klinga was an important kingdom because it controlled the trade routes with Southeast Asia. Because of this, Asoka, the Maurya king, wanted to capture it. Therefore he lead his huge army to Klinga in 261 BC.

The Klingons also led an army to the warfield. The small army of Klinga was not a match for Asoka's mighty army.

kalinga (mordern orrisa) was an independent state on the border of his vast empire, which was inherited .it controlled the routes to South India by land and sea. it could bring prosperity to the mauryan empire. moreover digvijya was ashoka policy. so he decided to conquer kalinga.
ashoka invaded kalinga in 261 bc. the kalingans gave tough fight, but they were defeated ultimately. In kalinga war 100,000 people died and 150,000 people were wounded and made prisoners of the war the sight of such a carnage made a deep impression in the ashoka mind. the unhappiness of women and children made him unhappy .he vowed that he will never make a war again . so he became a Buddhist. he was the first empire in history who gives up war after victory
