We can say a morality play is the didactic play intended to teach good morality to the audience or the morality play is essentially an allegory told through drama. The morality play has its root in the miracle and mystery plays of eleventh century.Miracle plays revolved around the lives of Saints or the Virgin Mary while mystery plays revolved around the Biblical stories. The Morality plays rose from this tradition and represent a transition between such religion –based plays to secular professional theater.Morality play was an externalized dramatization of a psychological or spiritual struggle . “The battle between the forces of good and evil in the human soul.”Most morality plays have The protagonist personified or represents the entire human species or humanity. Antagonist and other characters personifies virtues or vices. The story usually follow a path where the protagonist is tempted to the sin by the antagonist and only God does the protagonist find right direction. Morality plays were originally quite serious in tone and style. But with passage of time it began to incorporate elements from popular farce. Later the Devil and the Vice become figures of amusement instead of moral edification. In words of Hudson “Little by little ,as the personified abstractions came more and more to resemble individual persons, the morality passed insensibility into comedy”
