Molecular hydrogen occurs in two isomeric forms, one with its two proton nuclear spins aligned parallel, the other with its two proton spins aligned antiparallel. These two forms are often referred to as spin isomers. Parahydrogen is in a lower energy state than is orthohydrogen.

Depending upon the direction of the spin of the nuclei, the hydrogens are of two types: Ortho hydrogen molecules are those in which the spins of both the nuclei are in the same direction. Molecules of hydrogen in which the spins of both the nuclei are in the opposite direction are called para hydrogen .
