Protecting documents for feedback

Before you send a Microsoft Word document to another person for their comments, you can make use of a feature called Document protection. When you protect a document, the only changes that can be made to it are Tracked changes and Comments. Tracked changes and Comments do not become part of the document until you Unprotect it and modify the document yourself. Document Protection therefore allows you to ask your reviewers to make comments directly in the Microsoft Word document you send them.

Tracked changes are revisions to a document marked in different coloured fonts to the main text. Changes are not permanent until you Unprotect it and accept them. You can choose to accept or reject changes one by one or all at once.

Comments are notes attached to specific points in a document. When somebody inserts a comment into a Protected Document, Microsoft Word inserts a reference to it. When you pass your mouse over the reference, you will see the comment in a pop-up window
