Public intervention is a market regulation mechanism involving the purchase of agricultural products by Intervention Agencies when there are significant fluctuations in the market. These products are stored and sold when prices stabilise, thereby preventing market fluctuations and ensuring equality of access to the goods and equality of treatment of purchasers.

Although this measure has been the main instrument for market regulation of agricultural products in the EU for many years, this measure is currently applied as a safety net in limited situations of serious market crises.
