Rango Bapuji Gupte was an Indian diplomat, a revolutionary and a freedom fighter.

  • Satara's rulers were one of the Maratha empire's few autonomous branches. Ruler Pratapsinh sent Bapuji to England to address the case before the British Parliament after the British dissolved the government in 1839.
  • On returning to India he planned the 1857 revolt and was one of the masterminds behind the 1857 revolt, also known as the 1857 Indian Rebellion. He met with Nanasaheb and Tatya Tope and began building armed organizations in Satara, Kolhapur, Sangli and Belgaon.
  • However, many of the fighters he had recruited were killed when his plan was exposed, he went underground and was never again found.  Gupte is said to have lived incognito in Darwha city in Maharashtra's Yavatmal district.
