Surontiko Samin belonged to the Randublatung village in Java. The Randublatung village was a teak forest village. Samin challenged the Dutch saying that the state had not created the wind, water, earth and wood, so it could not own it.
Samin’s Challenge developed into a widespread movement. Samin was supported by his family members. Soon 3000 families followed his ideology and protested against the forest laws of the Dutch, by lying down on their land when the Dutch came to survey it. Many other villagers refused to pay taxes or fines . Some of them even refused to work for the Dutch in cutting trees.

Samin Challenge

Explanation:

Surontiko Samin led the Saminism Movement. He inhabited a village called Randublatung. This was a village with teak forests.

He challenged the Dutch when they came to his village for the classification of the land into the public and the salary land. Following the survey of the Dutch ministers, he gave a challenge by saying that the government has not produced natural resources such as wind, water, earth and wood thus it cannot show its possession over these.

During the course of time, this challenge spread throughout the village and take the form of a movement. The villagers protested against the  Dutch surveyors by lying down themselves on their land and shouted: “Kanggo” (I own it). Some of the villagers even piled stones on the streets which they had been selected to build.
