The Samyukta Maharashtra movement was not an ordinary movement. It was fought extraordinarily for a period of almost 5 years. The impact of the movement was so tremendous that the ruling party and the political leaders were exposed. The movement involved common man with the huge participation by women. The movement was led by the Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti, which comprised of four main parties – the Communist Party, the Praja Samajwadi Party, the Peasants and Workers Party as also the Republican Party.

Sanyukta Maharashtra Parishad

  • Samyukta Maharashtra Parishad was the predecessor union of Samyuktha Maharashtra Samithi established with the assertion for a distinct Marathi-speaking state out of the State of Bombay with Bombay as its capital.
  • It was ascertained on 1 November 1955 under the administration of Keshavrao Jedhe in Pune.
  • It mostly encompassed administrators of the leftist ideology such as Shreedar Mahdev Joshi, Shripad Amrit Dange, Narayan Ganesh Gore and many others.
  • It was established in resistance to the suggestion of establishing a bi-lingual state for Gujarat and Maharashtra by the State Re-organisation Committee.
