The shielding effect can be defined as a reduction in the effective nuclear charge on the electron cloud, due to a difference in the attraction forces on the electrons in the atom. It is also referred to as the screening effect(or) atomic shielding.

The polarity produced in the molecule by the interaction of two pi bonds or between a pi bond and loan pair of electron present on an adjacent atom is known as RESONANCE EFFECT

The decrease in the net force of attraction between the electrons present in the outer shell of an atom in the direction of nucleus due to change in linearity of the electric lines of forces between them due to the presence of high election density in the inner shells in the same atom is known as screening effect.

Shielding is the process of change in the direction of electric lines of forces between two charges due to presence of electric lines of forces of the other charge between them.

Shielding effect is however the same as Screening effect.

Note- The force of attraction or repulsion between two charges is independent of the presence of a third charge, however such condition may effect the net force between the two charges.
