The Harappans were expert bead makers. They used soft steatite and carnelian for making not only seals but also beads, often microscopic in size and made of a paste of the pulverised stone.

Long cylindrical carnelian beads must have been difficult to perforate. This stone was perhaps procured from Rajpipla-Ratnapura in the Narmada valley, where it occurs in large pebbles, and/or from the vicinity of Ujjain.

Carnelian beads were made at sites like Mohenjo-daro, Lothal and Chanhu-daro. Shell was frequently used material for ornaments (especially bangles), ladles, cups for libation or ablution, con-l tainers and inlays.
