● Estrogen -

  • Estrogen is female sex hormone secreted by ovaries.
  • It can be in 3 forms - estrione, estradiol, estriol.

# Functions of estrogen -

  1. proliferation of endometrium
  2. starts onset of labour
  3. secondary sexual characteristics in female

◆ Extra information -

  • Ovaries secrete two hormones - oestrogen and progesterone.

Functions of progesterone -

  1. prepares uterus for pregnancy
  2. supports pregnancy
  3. matures breast before lactation

The function of Estrogens:

  • Estrogen is the steroid hormone found in body of females that is essential for the reproduction of the organisms, as well as for the growth of secondary sexual characters.
  • Oestrogen is secreted by the granulosa cells of graafian follicle of ovary, and is associated with a lot of functions like
  • Ovulation - The growth and the secretion of the ovum is an action of estrogen.
  • Growth of sexual characters - The deposition of fats at particular places, growth of pubic hair, fewer hairs on body, etc all are functions of Oestrogen.
  • Preparation of the endometrium - Endometrium is produced during the proliferative stage of menstrual cycle by Oestrogen.
  • Attraction towards opposite sex - Attractions towards males is the characteristics of Oestrogen.
