Kanishka the Great, was the famous emperor of the Kushan dynasty. He ruled in the second century (c. AD 127–150). He is well known for his military, political, and spiritual achievements. He was a descendant of Kujula Kadphises who was the founder of the Kushan empire.

He ruled over Bactria. His empire extended from Turfan to Pataliputra. The main capital of his empire was located at Puruṣapura in Gandhara. Kapisa was another major capital.

His conquests and patronage of Buddhism played a significant role in the development of the Silk Road. They also helped in the transmission of Mahayana Buddhism from Gandhara to China.

Earlier it was believed that Kanishka ascended the throne in 78 CE, and this date was used as the beginning of the Saka calendar era. But now it is estimated that Kanishka ascended the throne in AD 127 by Falk (2001).
