Archaeology is the study of human activity in the past, primarily through the recovery and analysis of the material culture and environmental data that they have left behind, which includes artifacts, architecture, biofacts(also known as eco-facts) and cultural landscapes (the archaeological record).

The development of the field of archaeology has it roots with history and with those who were interested in the past, such as kings who wanted to show past glories of their respective nations.

The splendorous discovery of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro civilization during the early twentieth century marked a great deal of interest from the olden historians.

One can see that the interest in ancient Indian Archaeology developed parallel with that of Europe and France. A.C. Carlyle discovered the megaliths of Mirzapur.

First Asian Archaeological conference was held which was convened to mark the hundred years of archaeological existence in India. Universities, museums, research papers of the historians served to be the great source of archaeological data in India.
