Answer:

Operation Blue Star (June 3-6 1984) was a military operation ordered by Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister, to remove Sikh separatists who were amassing weapons in the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The operation was launched in response to a deterioration of law and order in Punjab.

The operation was carried out by the Army with tanks and armoured vehicles. Militarily successful, the operation aroused immense controversy over government's justification for the timing and style of the attack.

Official reports put the number of deaths among the Indian army at 83 and the number of civilian deaths at 492, though independent estimates ran much higher.

The impact of the military assault, its aftermath and the increased tensions led to assaults on members of the Sikh community within India and uproar amongst Sikhs worldwide. In India, many Sikhs resigned from armed and civil administrative office and returned their government awards. Revenge for the desecration of the Sikh shrine was pledged by some in the Sikh community, and Indira Gandhi was assassinated by two of her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984.
