Two main techniques of environmental management are (A) Environmental Information System (ENVIS) (B) Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System (GIS) Technology!

In the present day of developed scientific world, information technology plays an important role for providing authentic information regarding the protection of environment and its sustainable development.

World Wide Web (www) or internet provides all types of information for conducting environmental research to protect environmental quality band study detrimental effects of different pollutants.

Some important techniques used in the management of environment are described below:

(A) Environmental Information System (ENVIS):
In December 1982, the Government of India established an Environmental information system (EIWIS) for providing necessary environmental information to scientists, research workers, engines policy makers, etc. Till now there are 25 ENVIS throughout the country to assist the researchers on a broad area of Environment Studies.

The ENVIS centres have been set up in the areas pollution control, toxic chemicals, central and offshore ecology ecofriendly green technology, biodegradation of wastes and environmental management. ENVIS focal point concentrates on integration of national efforts in environmental information collection, collation, storage, retrieval and dissemination of all concerned.

(B) Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System (GIS) Technology:
Remote sensing and GIS technology involve understanding and management of natural resources. The technique is capable of detecting climatic changes accruing in the environment and thereby, necessary steps can be taken to minimise the losses due to climatic changes (natural disaster) India has progressed a lot in the remote sensing utilisation for developmental activities at national and regional levels.

The major achievements include operational services for mapping, monitoring and management of resources. In addition, it provides valuable tips towards, relief measures in case of natural disasters like floods, cyclones, droughts etc.
