- Among the successful clubs of Paris, the most successful club was the Jacobin club which got its name from the former convent of St Jacob in Paris.
- The leader of the Jacobins was Maximilian Robespierre.
- The members of the club belonged to the lower middle class,i.e.,the people from the less prosperous sections of society which included small shopkeepers,shoemakers,etc.
- They started wearing long striped trousers which was a way of proclaiming the end of the power wielded by the weares of knee breeches.
- These Jacobins came to be known as Sans-culottes who wore a red cap that symbolised liberty.
