Catenation- it is the linkage of atoms of the same element into longer chains. it occurs usually in carbon and form co valent bonds with other carbon atoms to form long chain and structures.

Functional group- a group of atoms responsible for the characteristic reactions of a particular compound.

Homologous series- it is a series of compounds with the same general formula. It usually varying by a single parameter- such as the length of the carbon chain.
