A) The tropical evergreen forests usually occur in areas receiving more than 200 cm of rainfall and having a temperature of 15 to 30 degrees Celsius. ... These forests are dense and multi-layered. They harbour many types of plants and animals. The trees are evergreen as there is no period of drought.

B) Tropical deciduous forests are the most widespread forests of India. They are also called the monsoon forests and spread over the region receiving rainfall between 200 cm and 70 cm. Trees of this forest-type shed their leaves for about six to eight weeks in dry summer.

C) The Deccan thorn scrub forests are a xeric shrubland ecoregion of south India and northern Sri Lanka. Historically this area was covered by tropical dry deciduous forest, but this only remains in isolated fragments. The vegetation now consists of mainly of southern tropical thorn scrub type forests.

D) Montane forests occur between the submontane zone and the subalpine zone. The elevation at which one habitat changes to another varies across the globe, particularly by latitude. The upper limit of montane forests, the tree line, is often marked by a change to hardier species that occur in less dense stands.

E) A mangrove is a shrub or small tree that grows in coastal saline or brackish water. The term is also used for tropical coastal vegetation consisting of such species.

  • Their plant growth is good.

  • They receive annual rainfall of 200 cm with short dry season.

  • These forest are generally found in the areas of Western Ghat and Island group of Lakshadweep , Andaman and Nicobar , upper part of Assam and Tamil Nadu coast.

  • It has a variety of trees, shrubs and Creepers. These forests appear green throughout the year.

  • The common animals found in these areas are monkey , elephants , deer and lemurs. The one horned rhinoceros are also found.

b) Tropical Deciduous Forest

  • They receive annual rainfall between 270 and 70cm.

  • They are the most widespread forests of our country. They are also called monsoon forest.

  • These forests are mostly found in the eastern part of the country - North Eastern states along the foothills of the Himalayas , Chhattisgarh , west Odhisha and Jharkhand, and on the eastern slopes of Western Ghats.

  • On the basis of availability of water it is divided into two parts ;
  1. Moist Deciduous forests with the rainfall between 200cm and 100cm.
  2. Dry deciduous forests with the rainfall between 100cm and 70 cm.

  • Teak , bamboo , sal , sandalwood , shisham , khair , kusum , arjun and mulberry are some of the species found in the forest.

  • The common animal found in the forest are lion, tiger, pig, elephant and huge variety of birds, snakes, lizards and tortoise that are also found here.

c) The Thorn forests and Scrubs,

  • It comprises of thorn trees and bushes.

  • They receive rainfall of less than 70cm.

  • They mostly found in the Northwastern part of India including semi arid areas of Gujarat , Rajasthan, MP , UP , Chhattisgarh and Haryana.

  • Acrias , euphorbias , palms , cacti the plant species of this region.

  • The common animal in these forests are rats , rabbits , mice , fox , tiger , wolf , camels and horses.

d) Mountane Forests

  • These forests are mostly found in the mountain regions,

  • The wet temperate type of forest located between the height of 1000 and 2000m.

  • The average height of the trees were found between one 1500 to 3000m in the temperate forest.

  • It comprises of coniferous trees like pine , devdar , sprace , fir etc.

  • The common animals found in this forests are Kashmir stag , spotted dear , wild sheep , jack , rabbit, tibetan antelope, shaggy horn ,wild ibex etc.

e) Mangrove Forests

  • The mangrove tidal forests are found in the areas of costs influenced by tides.

  • The Delta Ganga, Mahanadi, Krishna ,Godavari and Kaveri are covered by these vegetation.

  • In the Ganga Brahmaputra Delta , Sundari trees are found. Palm, coconut, Keora , Agar etc. also grow in this vegetation.

  • Tortoise, crocodile, gharials and snake were found in this forest. Royal Bengal Tiger also found here.m
