ER divides the intercellular spaces into two distinct compartments i.e.,luminal and extra luminal compartments.

The ER bearing ribosomes on their surface is called rough ER .In the absence of ribosomes they appear smooth and are called Smooth ER .

RER is involved in protein synthesis and secretion

SER is site for synthesis of lipids
