Bt refers to Bacillus thuringensis. It is a bactrium. It produces protiens that kill certain insects such as lepidoterans, coleopterans and dipterans etc. these protiens are produced in form of crystals. it is converted to active form in presence of alkaline medium(in gut of insects). the activated toxin binds to surface of midgut epithelial cells and create pores that cause cell swelling and lysis and eventually cause death of that insect.
So, these Bt toxin producing genes are isolated from that bacterium and incorporated into crop plants like cotton. That particular veriety of cotton is known as Bt cotton. It posses resistance to above mentioned insects.
