ELECTROSTATICS
________________
1. ELECTRICITY
The phenomenon due to which is suitable combination of bodies, on rubbing, get electrified is called electricity.
2. TWO KINDS OF ELECTRIC CHARGES
The bodies having the electric charge similar to glass rod are said to be positively charged.
The bodies having the electric charge similar to ebonite rod are said to be negatively charged.
The like charges repel each other.
The unlike charges attract each other.
The force of attraction or repulsion operates even when the charges are placed in vacuum.
3. STRUCTURE OF ATOM
A kind of subatomic particles were found to have a charge similar to the charge produced on ebonite rod. They were named electron and the charge on them was considered negative.
Second kind of subatomic particle were found to have a charge similar to the charge produced on glass rod. They were named proton and the charge on them was considered positive.
Some other particles were found to have no charge, but their mass was equal to the mass of proton. They were named as neutrons.
4. LAW OF CONSERVATION OF ELECTRIC CHARGES
It states that the sum of total electrons in a system is a constant quantity.
