The role of randomization in clinical trials. Random assignment of treatments is an essential feature of experimental design in general and clinical trials in particular. It provides broad comparability of treatment groups and validates the use of statistical methods for the analysis of results.
Blocking increases the sample size, which in turn reduces variability; individuals within blocks should be as different as possible to create a more heterogeneous experiment. Blocking reduces bias in experiments; individuals should be randomly divided into their blocks.
